Sustainable Farmers – Stewards of the Land . Chapter 9

singinghillsIntroducing, SINGING HILLS GOAT DAIRY, NERSTRAND, MINNESOTA.

Lynne & Kate run their Nerstrand, Minnesota farm on 25 acres.  They began 8 years ago with vegetables for market which has evolved into a goat dairy.  Their cheeses are super fresh, with robust flavor and subtle textures.  A result in part to a small boutique operation, but mostly it’s the love for their goats and dedication to the craft of cheesemaking.  You can find their cheeses at Mill City & Riverwalk Farmers Markets.    It’s a challenge to keep up with diary regulations for cheesemaking, most of which do not apply to a small operation such as this, making for added & unnecessary expense and work.  The goats here are happy and healthy.  Lynne is working on extending fencing to provide additional natural foraging area.  The goats will have more access to a variety of ground plants, tree leaves, bark, dirt..all of this organic matter provides nutrition, minerals and enzymes that feed and hay can’t provide.    Animal health is directly related to their environment which is why it’s critical that chickens be truly free range and hoofed animals be allowed to roam pasture.

Photography Tip: My drawing professor in art school insisted students should look close, and extract the most interesting part of a scene, then exaggerate it.   This is what the great painters did like Michaelangelo or O’Keefe.  This window for instance was part of a whole big barn, and I found it to be the most interesting detail.
