Homage to Snow

I missed our usual Minnesota winter…the veils of white that enclose us in a white privacy of brilliant storm. Swan-like forms invest in hidden thorns and fill the streets from wall to wall. The frolic of architecture of snow on tree branches and rooftops.

Fables de folie. A short epic tale with a moral lesson often with animals or supernatural or extraordinary persons, legends or myths. I often combine genres of art in my work, opening possibilities. Creating these crazy fables with brides has been inspiring. Watch for more.

The Huldra Bride. Once upon a time, a boy woke from his dream, to find himself on a snowy blanket nestled in the glistening Norwegian forest. The sky was lit by the splendor of the moon, and above, he saw a swirling sky of snow and bright blue ice. And then a beautiful lady appeared as though she walked from the forest ice itself. He had to catch his breath, for he realized who she was by the long tail sweeping alongside her slender body. Men fear the huldra of the hidden forest, half woman, half beast. He was forbidden to comment on the tail. “Mi-lady, I see how beautiful your hair flows about your horns, so long it hangs down to the ground”. The boy bowed to his knees being very careful not to disrespect the creature princess in fear for his life. The lonely Huldra need husbands. They lure men with their beauty and tongue. “I would like to watch you sleep, but don’t be afraid, walk with me now through the wavering forest of bluegreen leaves with its watery sun and three moons”. Huldra captivate their husbands-to-be and lead them into the winter wood forever. And as they crossed over, she offered him a silver branch and small white flower to join them forever among the red deer, and cousin fox and grandfather burr oak. The boy surrendered to the magnificence of huldra’s being as she lost her tail and became the great stag’s wife hidden among the wood and shimmery skies.

Once they were particles of light, now they are the radiant sun.

Does it matter who kissed who first…  Just being around new love brings desperate hope. Above: just engaged. That’s my niece, Anna.  She’s brilliant and beautiful. So proud of her.  Below:  Secret proposal.  I was hiding behind a tree with a telephoto lens to capture their priceless expressions.
